Making a BLUE CONCRETE & Plywood Bench || DIY Tutorial

Michael Clifford September 20, 2018

This video shows how to make a modern DIY bench with blue concrete legs and a plywood top. This is a fairly simple concrete and woodworking project, and you could easily change the dimensions to make a modern coffee table, side table, or even a dining table the same way. The form for the concrete legs is made from melamine and I used ½” plywood for the bench top. For an extra decorative touch, I also cut strips of curly maple for the outer layers of the stacked plywood top.

As usual, I used a glass fiber reinforced concrete (GFRC) mix for the concrete. GFRC is incredibly strong without any additional reinforcement, beyond the alkali resistant glass fibers. Thus, it was the perfect material to use for this style of bench legs.

This is a remote bench design collaboration with my friend Jonny, over at Jonny Builds. Make sure to check out Jonny’s bench video after you watch this.

Concrete + Epoxy + LEDs -- what's not to love?! Link to full BUILD VIDEO in my BIO.
These are a couple beauty shots that didn't end up being used for the video thumbnail. This lamp is a mashup of trendy materials... But, I think the design came out pretty clean. To make the lamp, I placed flexible water pipe in a channel cut in a 2x4, and then poured @totalboat 2:1 #epoxyresin over the pipe so it has a clean seamless look. I then cast a piece of 2x4 with protuding dowels in the concrete base, which is a white #gfrc mix from @fishstoneinc . Head on over to the YouTube video to see all the details of how it was made.

SWIPE➡️ I just wrapped up the full video for this EPOXY-covered LED pendant light, and it should be out today or tomorrow on my YouTube channel (whenever I get the go ahead from the sponsor 😁). This experimental light was somewhat of a Frankenstein to try an idea of making an organically shaped LED channel following the wood grain, and pouring @totalboat epoxy over LEDs. It was also an excuse to use this locust cookie slab I'd had sitting in the shop for a long time... This one was a ton of fun to make, and I'm planning to refine the aesthetic in a MUCH bigger version....which you might have seen a glimpse of in my last couple posts :) .
